Columbus is Ohio’s state capital and is a sophisticated city with a thriving business base and world class shopping, restaurants, galleries, entertainment, and sports teams, both colligate and professional. It is a home to approximately 750,000 residents which makes it Ohio’s largest city. It is also home to approximately 100,000 college students and numerous higher learning institutions. Generally, Columbus’ economy is strong and diverse and ranks in the top 10 economies in the United States, according to Policom Corporation.

Central Ohio has a host of suburban towns and quaint bedroom communities. These towns range in population and size but they all have something special to offer their residents. Most Central Ohio residents find that the area is easy to navigate which makes for quick commutes. One can get almost anywhere around Columbus’ outer belt, I-270, in about 20 minutes. Ohio has more colleges and universities than almost any other state. Because of this, Central Ohio has a host of college towns. Most were founded in the early 1800’s. Some are just a few miles from downtown Columbus like Bexley, home to Capital University. Others are scattered throughout the area like Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio Weslyan in Delaware, Denison University in Granville, and many, many others. These towns attract people of all ages and backgrounds to their charming streets looking for a taste of the good life.

The Central Ohio Housing Market

It is important to remember that real estate markets are local and each has its own set of variables. The Central Ohio housing market does not fit most of the national trends reported in the media. It has remained more stable and healthier than many of the markets around the country. In fact, in late 2007 Forbes.com reported that the Central Ohio real estate market was the 3rd most stable market in the country. According to Moody’s Economy.com Columbus, Ohio is the most affordable housing market out of the 46 markets studied. Central Ohio’s median home price continues to be considerably lower than the national average. In 2007, the Central Ohio median sales price was $172,531 and the national median was $218,900.

Central Ohio History

Central, Ohio was once home to many ancient civilizations and evidence of this can be found throughout the region with historic burial mounds and other earthworks. In 1816, Columbus was named the state capital after much debate among the state leaders of the time. It was a fledgling city placed in the center of the state to allow for easy access to the far corners of Ohio. Today all of Ohio’s borders are within a two and a half hour drive of the city.

Central, Ohio has an average temperature of 51.7 degrees. The area gets on average 39 inches of rain and 27 inches of snow per year. Columbus has an average of 14 days each year with temperatures above 90 degrees and an average of 6 days a year with temperatures below 0 degrees. December is Columbus’ cloudiest month with 31% sunshine. September is the sunniest month with 62% sunshine.
